A century before the Irish came to America during The Great Famine, Celtic immigrants from Ireland, Scotland and Wales settled among sovereign Indigenous nations in the Southeast region of the U.S. Amid the clash of volatile foreign, domestic and tribal powers, a surprising story of kinship and identity emerged among the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Seminole and Muscogee (Creek) nations through intermarriage with these frontiersmen. Today these tribes are known collectively as the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma, and bear rich, captivating cultures along with complex histories.

The Chiefs, Clans and Kin fine art exhibition brings to light this little-understood history by artists of the Five Civilized Tribes who also hold this ancestry. More than 60 artworks respond to both the distinction and the melding of Indigenous and Celtic paradigms, and to the deep connections of family and culture held by First Americans.

The Chiefs, Clans and Kin exhibition features 32 Southeast artists exploring issues of singular and blended identities; cultural norms and anomalies; and shared histories of subjugation and colonization, among other subject matter. As professional and emerging artists, many have exhibited across the U.S. in museums such as the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in New York and Washington, DC, and numerous other prestigious art institutions in North America.
